About

The Department of Anthropology was established in the year 1985 and was headed by the eminent anthropologist late Prof. A.R.N Srivastava. The department was earlier seated in the Senate House Building of the University. In the year 2003, it was shifted to the Banda Guest House building of the University and subsequently since 2016 the department is located in the newly constructed academic building of the University called the New Academic Complex.

Since its inception the Department of Anthropology has contributed immensely to the academic delivery of the university. The department provides education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The faculty of the department train the research scholars pursuing a D.Phil course in Anthropology. The department is proud of many alumni students working in various academic and development sectors of the country.

The department caters to both biological and social branches of the discipline and has well- equipped laboratories for Osteology, Osteometry, Prehistoric Archaeology, and an Anthropology Museum displaying human evolution through casts of human ancestors and various cultural objects of present-day tribes of India.  An interesting feature of the anthropology course is the mandatory training of students (undergraduates and postgraduates) in the field with modern research tools and techniques of anthropology. The present faculty members of the department also adopt a modern approach to teaching and research. The range of contemporary research interests spans from tribal issues to scientific analysis of the human body.  The scientific temper of the faculty for research work, besides the normal teaching, is clear from the many published research papers in many referred national and international journals.

Public lecture on “Changing Paradigms of Development: A Critical Review” on 8 September, 2017
On September 8, 2017 the Department of Anthropology and Department of Sociology, University of Allahabad, jointly organized a public lecture in the New Academic Building. The topic for the lecture was “Changing Paradigms of Development: A Critical Review”. The invited speaker was Prof. D. N. Jena, former Vice Chancellor of Utkal University of Culture, Bhubaneswar. Prof Shekhar Adhikari, Dean, College Development Cell, AU graced the occasion by chairing the programme. Dr. Prashant Khattri, Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology, compeered the entire programme.  Prof. Ashish Saxena, the Head of the Department initiated the discussion by raising some of the very contemporary and crucial debates in the domain of development. Dr. Muneer Illath, Department of Sociology presented a brief introduction to the Department. Then Dr. Khirod Ch. Moharana introduced the distinguished speaker to the house by highlighting his academic and administrative achievements. Prof. Jena presented his talk in a very lively and interactive method and the students participated in the entire talk enthusiastically. He began with the Nehruvian model of Development in our country by highlighting various plans and schemes during the 1950s. Eventually he brought out, in a very lucid manner, the pitfalls of economics-oriented development. He argued that development in true sense cannot be quantified. By citing examples from the kind of development that is happening in Odisha Prof. Jena reiterated that we are creating underdevelopment in the name of development. He used the word “Vinash” to highlight the consequences of use-and-throw mode of policy making. Most often the policy makers are far away from the ground reality and as a result the development planning and pragrammes become utter failures. Finally the speaker talked about human development and how the new paradigms of development are becoming human-centred. Then Prof. Adhikari presented his brief deliberation on development issues and how human security is a crucial matter in development. He argued that national security and human security can be considered as the means of development today. Then there were queries from the audiences which were answered by the speaker. Finally Dr. Rahul Patel presented the vote of thanks. The lecture was attended by faculty members, research scholars, and students of the social science discipline.

The Department of Anthropology, University of Allahabad organised a Special Lecture on Social Theory and Ethnography on Friday 1st  February 2019. This lecture was delivered by renowned anthropologist and sociologist Dr. Ananta Kumar Giri, Professor at the Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS), Chennai. With a PhD and Masters from the Johns Jopkins University, Baltimore, USA and an impressive Delhi School of Economics lineage, Prof. Giri has taught in many Universities in India and abroad including the University of Sunshine Coast Queensland, Australia; University of Kentucky (USA); Aalborg University (Denmark);  University of Freiburg (Germany);  University of Western Ontario, Canada. He has been a fellow of Alexander von Humboldt and Rockefeller Institute, USA. Prof. Giri discussed the many aspects of the social theory and ethnography. He argues that theorising is a dynamic movement of self, culture, society, and the nature as it is related to our actions, reflections, meditations to understand the world more meaningfully and holistically as well as to transform it. But much of social theorising in the modern world is primarily Euro-American and despite the so-called globalisation of knowledge, this condition of one-sided Euro-American valorisation of knowledge and neglect of others continues unabated. He emphasises for a new vocation of social research by pleading for a simultaneous engagement in activism and creative understanding, fieldwork and philosophical reflections, ontological self-cultivation and epistemic labour of learning. He proposes Anthropology and Sociology as Quest for a Good Society. For him, through social theory we try to engage with a spirit of critique, creativity and transformations. He contended that ethnography of the margins has been the discourse of anthropology. The event was chaired by Dr. Rahul Patel, Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology, UoA. Dr. Patel introduced the theme of the event and opined that if social theory is all about thinking social life scientifically; then ethnography is an interpretative, reflexive and constructive process which is highly dependent on thickly described case studies and fieldwork. He stressed that ethnography is both process as well as product. Dr. Subhasis Sahoo,Assistant Professor, Department of Sociologyraised his concern that how to deal with cultural ethnocentrism by studying one’s own community/village/50-100 kms. far off from one’s own locality/residence. Dr. Sahoo further argued that each theorist’s work we study in relationship to some other relevant social theorists as part of ecology of thinking and theorising Indian society and the world. Dr. Khirod Chandra Moharana, Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology,  remarked that there is a dynamic relationship between self and society. The on-going creative transformation in self and society has been the matter of analysis both in anthropology and sociology. Understanding this creative transformation can be possible through ethnography. Prof. Giri responded to a bunch of queries raised by students hailing from Anthropology, Sociology and Political Science namely, Anmol, Ajit, Mohan, Pradyumna, Abhishek, Rishbah, Brijesh Gupta, Shruti Sinha. The event began with the presentation of bouquet to the key speaker by Dr. Waseem Fatima followed by the presentation of the copy of Srimad Bhagvad Gita by Dr. Khirod Chandra Moharana. The event was attended by the faculty members, research scholars and students of Anthropology, Sociology and Political Science, namely, Somesh Kumar, Rajkamal Shukla, Rohit Singh, Avesh Gautam, Prabhakar Singh, Atul Maurya, Anand Mishra, Shruti Singh, Chanderpal Gautam, Shivam Asthana and many more undergraduate and postgraduate students. Mr. Vikas Pandey, UGC-JRF & research scholar, Department of Anthropology, successfully compered the programme and offered formal vote of thanks.

Head, Department of Anthropology, AU
While celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Department of Anthropology in collaboration with the Institute for Gandhian Thought and Peace Studies, University of Allahabad organised a Special Lecture on Friday 25th January 2019 on the theme “Gandhi and Diaspora: Some Explorations in Contemporary India”. This lecture was delivered by eminent social anthropologist and scholar Prof. Chandrashekhar Bhat, Founder-Director of Centre for the Study of Indian Diaspora (CSID), at theUniversity of Hyderabad, the first ever national Centre in India devoted to diaspora studies and later inducting ‘diaspora studies’ into the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London.  Prof. Bhat delved into the concept and discourses on diaspora, identity and citizenship. He also established linkages between the concept of diaspora and Gandhiji’s journey as Non-Resident Indian (NRI). He argued that there is anthropology behind diaspora and diaspora can be comprehended as a globally mobile category of identification emerged with subjugation, state oppression, suffering and displacement, thereby connecting it with anthropology. Commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Gandhi, he added that Gandhiji and his personalities motivated diaspora communities and he was the first person to integrate the then Indians who were the part of diaspora communities dispersed in different corners of the globe. Prof. Bhat concluded that Gandhiji’s contribution had been immense in making of the Indian diaspora in South Africa, Mauritius, Surinam, Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago, to name a few here and consequently, the making of the Mahatma by the diaspora communities. The event was chaired by Prof. V. K. Rai, Director, Institute of Gandhian Thought and Peace Studies, UoA and also the Head, Department of Anthropology, UoA. Prof. Rai welcomed the key speaker and shed light on Gandhiji’s ‘Satyagraha’ in South Africa and Gandhi happened to be the first person to understand the plight of the then Indians in South Africa. Further, he contended that Gandhi has not been focused adequately in the discourse of diaspora as compared to other areas of discourse. It is in this context, the study of ‘Gandhi and Indian Diaspora’ owes its relevance in contemporary times in order to discuss: Why Gandhi and Indian Diaspora are so important. Dr. Rahul Patel, Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology, flagged the methodological challenges faced by the anthropologists during diaspora study, in reference to ethnographic fieldwork. Dr. Subhasis Sahoo, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, raised the issue of socio-political dimension of the diaspora in the era of globalisation. Mr. Sarvesh, a research scholar, Department of Anthropology enquired the emerging and new diaspora at the backdrop of the Tibetan diaspora. While offering vote of thanks and special remarks on the theme of the event, Dr. Khirod Chandra Moharana, Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology, emphasised on the need for the study of Indian Diaspora as a subject matter of anthropological investigation and anthropologists have been working on issues pertaining to diaspora such as homeland-making, political subjectivity, refugees, asylum-seekers, transnational kinship and etc. The event started with the presentation of the copies of Srimad Bhagvad Gita to the key speaker and the dignitaries on the dais. Mr. Vikas Kumar, UGC-JRF & research scholar, Department of Anthropology, successfully compeered the programme; while other faculty members, research scholars and students of the Department of Anthropology and Department of Sociology, namely, Monika Dwivedi, Somesh Kumar, Vinay Kumar Yadav, Rajkamal Shukla, Rohit Singh, Deepika Srivastava, Shesh Narayan Ojha, Garima Prajapati, Vineet Singh, Sachin Giri, Avesh Gautam, Shivani Mishra, Prabhakar Singh, Dr. Waseem Fatima, Dr. Prashant Khattri, Dr. Ashok Pandey, Rita, Atul Maurya, Anand Mishra and many more undergraduate and postgraduate students attended the collaborative academic event. The event would not have been successful without the active support of Mr. Amitabh Keshari, Office-in-Charge, Department of Anthropology, UoA.
